Volvo Trucks has announced that all of its Euro 5 engines are now certified for use with 100 per cent hydrotreated vegetable oil, a type of renewable diesel fuel. This certification was made possible by Volvo Trucks.
In 2013, Volvo Trucks started conducting real-world testing of its engines using HVO at a concentration of one hundred per cent, to determine how this would influence engine performance and the components of the engine. Over two years, the six field test trucks, each of which was fitted with a Euro 5 engine, logged above 600,000 miles of commercial service driving.
According to Volvo Trucks, the use of HVO renewable diesel as a fuel produces the same effects as regular diesel while reducing CO2 emissions by anywhere from 30 to 90 per cent, depending on the feedstock that was used.
The HVO performed exceptionally well in our engines during the field test and demonstrated that it can be utilized in the same environments as conventional diesel fuel. According to Tobias Bergman, product manager for alternative fuels and hybrids at Volvo Trucks, "it is also possible to freely mix diesel and HVO."
As a result of the successful field test results, Volvo Trucks has given its blessing to the use of HVO in all of its Euro 5 engines, and the service intervals will remain the same. The business intends to complete the worldwide certification process for HVO in the D5 and D8 engines for Euro 6 in September 2015. Certification efforts for the D11, D13, and D16 engines are also currently underway.
HVO can be made from a variety of renewable raw materials like vegetable and animal fats, rapeseed oil, or waste from the butchering process. The fuel can be distributed through diesel depots that are already in existence, and it makes use of the same kinds of tanks and pumps as conventional diesel does.
"We see an increasing interest from both customers and transport buyers," said Lars Mrtensson, director of environment and innovation at Volvo Trucks. "We believe in HVO's potential," he added. "We see an increasing interest from both customers and transport buyers." "Because of this, we are hoping that our investment in fuel will contribute to an increase in demand and that in the future, the HVO will be able to be used in a lot of other places around the world."
